In 1492,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
~~ The Rest of the
Story of Columbus ~~
In 1492, Columbus set sail westward from Spain in
three ships with the goal of reaching the Orient and establishing trade in spices. Landing
in America by mistake, he discovered gold, not spices, and returned to Spain a hero.
But did you know that Columbus had 3 more voyages to
America?
On his second voyage in 1493 he set sail with
17 ships and 1200 men to establish a colony and trading post in America. The trading post
failed because there wasn't anyone to trade with.
On his third voyage in 1498 he was returned
in chains by angry colonists.
On his fourth voyage in 1502, he explored the
coast of Central America, still looking for the Orient. He became stranded in Jamaica when
his ships were eaten by worms. He eventually made it back to Spain, where he died a broken
man.
The moral of the story:
If you are going to conquer a New
World, you had better watch out for the worms!
